Welcome to the Intelligent Diabetic.

The purpose of this blog is to give you the information you need to be able to make intelligent decisions together with your medical team that benefits you and your health and to tell you about my journey through diabetes.

I’ve been a Type 1 Diabetic for 46 years and a Diabetic RN for 6 years. My Grandmother and Dad were also diabetics – so you could say I know a little about the disease.

My beginning story

When I was 14 I was away on vacation with my family and we were out shopping when I became super thirsty. I asked my Mum for a drink and slammed it down super fast. Then I asked for another drink. Warning bells went off in my Mum’s head knowing that diabetes is prevalent in my family with my Dad and Nana, so as soon as we got home Mum did a urine test (we didn’t have glucometers back then) and the test came back as +2% urine glucose.  So off to the local town doctor I went.

Testing back then was not what it is today but of course the blood tests were done and diabetes became my life traveling partner. We returned home from vacation and I went into the local children’s hospital for 10 days. Started on insulin and the rest has been a journey for sure.

I want to share my journey with you and my knowledge so that when you talk to your MD about your feelings and your disease you are intelligent about what you want to ask and are able to come away satisfied with the answers given to you by your team.
